The Rise of Electric ATVs: Can-Am’s Outlander Electric
In a significant step towards sustainable off-road adventure, Can-Am, a branch of BRP, has electrified its ATV lineup with the introduction of the Outlander Electric. Following their foray into electric motorcycles, this electric ATV marks a new era for the brand.
During a recent visit to Jackson Hole, Wyoming, I experienced the Outlander Electric firsthand, and its performance left a lasting impression.
Design and Performance: Outlander Electric
Designed for utility, the Outlander Electric boasts notable specifications. Its electric motor produces 47 hp and 53 lb-ft of torque, offering instantaneous and noise-free power. The standout feature, however, is its remarkable towing capacity of 1,830 lbs, surpassing even some high-end gasoline ATVs.
Equipped with an 8.9 kWh battery, the ATV delivers a range of up to 50 miles (80 km). While this range might seem modest for recreational users, it suffices for daily tasks on a farm or for hunters and park rangers who prefer minimal noise.
Charging options include Level 2 charging, which can replenish the battery from 20% to 80% in 50 minutes, as well as the convenience of overnight charging using a regular 120-volt outlet.
Can-Am has integrated several customer-centric features in the Outlander Electric. The ATV offers three ride modes: Normal, Sport, and Work, enabling users to tailor power delivery for different tasks. Additional features include a 5-inch color display, XPS Recon Force tires, and a full skid plate for added protection.
The Outlander Electric is now available for purchase at US $12,999 through Can-Am’s website and authorized dealers.
Experiencing the Outlander Electric in the Field
The quiet operation of the electric motor is transformative for various applications. This feature is beneficial for farmers working near livestock, hunters avoiding game disturbance, and anyone wishing to enjoy nature without the noise of a gas engine.
At lower speeds, the Outlander Electric is nearly silent, with only the sound of the electric motors and tires becoming noticeable at higher speeds. This quietness allows for an immersive experience in nature, as I discovered while riding through trails near Grand Teton National Park.
Electrek’s Perspective
Can-Am’s launch of the Outlander Electric represents a pivotal moment in the off-road vehicle sector. While smaller startups have ventured into electric ATVs, Can-Am’s entry with a full-fledged model highlights a significant industry shift.
The focus on utility and work is strategic, leveraging the same powertrain as Can-Am’s electric motorcycles. Although the 50-mile range may be a concern for some, it meets the needs of the ATV’s target users, such as ranchers and small farm owners.
The high towing capacity and quiet operation are advantageous for work-related tasks. With a starting price of $17,799, the Outlander Electric positions itself competitively against high-end gas-powered ATVs, considering reduced maintenance and lower electricity costs.
