Industries like concrete manufacturing are particularly in focus due to their high carbon footprint. The production process, especially the creation of clinker, is responsible for a large portion of concrete emissions.

Despite being promoted as a renewable energy source, forest biomass often consists of essential forest components, like understorey vegetation and fallen logs, which are critical for biodiversity and carbon storage. Burning this biomass releases considerable amounts of carbon dioxide, and the effects linger for centuries.

While the native forest sector struggles due to its reliance on low-value products like woodchips, the plantation sector focuses on high-value timber. State agencies face challenges in obtaining market certification for wood products, partly due to the biodiversity in logged areas.

Broader Implications

This project is not unique. Plans are underway for Verdant Earth Industries to revive the Redbank Power Station in New South Wales using similar methods. Critics argue that burning what is labeled as “wood waste” could threaten ecosystems and species dependent on forest regrowth.

As Australia commits to ending deforestation by 2030, the environmental costs of using forest biomass for energy need to be weighed against potential benefits. Exploring truly clean energy options like concentrated solar power might offer a more sustainable path.
