Sustainability Science: Germany’s Approach to Global Environmental Challenges
As our world grapples with interconnected challenges, Germany is taking a leading role in sustainability science, focusing on interdisciplinary collaboration and research. The German Committee Future Earth (DKN) is at the forefront of these efforts, promoting comprehensive approaches to sustainability that address climate change, biodiversity, and social inequalities in tandem.
With the international community pondering the future beyond the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the DKN is crucial in shaping the agenda for sustainable development. This scientific advisory body, affiliated with the German Research Foundation (DFG), spearheads initiatives that integrate environmental, economic, and social dimensions.
The Role of German Committee Future Earth
DKN serves as Germany’s conduit to global research networks like Future Earth and the World Climate Research Programme (WCRP). It fosters interdisciplinary sustainability science by supporting research and providing platforms for networking among scientists and stakeholders globally.
The committee’s strategic objective is to support transformative research that contributes to societal change while reinforcing the scientific foundation necessary for addressing complex sustainability issues.
Sustainability Science Summit
The Sustainability Science Summit is a key initiative of the DKN, gathering experts from various disciplines to discuss and drive research priorities. The 2025 summit in Germany attracted around 250 participants, focusing on how science can aid societal transformation amidst growing threats to sustainable development.
A pivotal outcome was the “Sustainability science more urgent than ever!” statement, underscoring the importance of sustainability science in policy discussions, especially following Germany’s federal elections in 2025.
The next summit is slated for July 2027 in Bonn, promising continued international collaboration and advancement in sustainability science.
Research Agendas and Working Groups
The DKN also supports working groups that identify research gaps and foster innovative approaches to sustainability. These groups address emerging topics, such as green skills in policy, circular economies, and biodiversity protection.
New working groups are regularly established through open calls, allowing researchers to propose topics that align with evolving scientific and societal needs.
Additional Initiatives
Through strategic publications like the 2022 position paper “Research priorities for sustainability science”, the DKN delineates key areas for scientific advancement. These efforts are complemented by sessions at conferences such as the European sustainability science conference, exploring technology’s role in just transitions.
The DKN’s affiliation with the Climate Service Center Germany (GERICS) links climate services with sustainability science, encouraging evidence-based decision-making and research with practical applications.
Looking Forward
Future Earth is establishing a Global Coordination Hub to enhance the impact of sustainability science worldwide, a collaboration between GERICS and Arizona State University. This initiative reflects the growing need for robust international research networks to meet the intensifying challenges of sustainability.
Through summits, strategic collaborations, and publications, the DKN is instrumental in advancing sustainability science, fostering the knowledge and cooperation necessary for future sustainable development.
