The Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) has selected OWC, a UK-based renewable energy consultancy from the ABL Group, to assist with geophysical and geotechnical surveys at two offshore wind farm sites in Portugal. ABL Group’s water and environmental consultancy, Hidromod, based in Portugal, is also involved.

IPMA is conducting a survey across two areas from the Allocation Plan for Offshore Renewable Energy (PAER), specifically Leixões and Figueira da Foz.

The survey began in April, with OWC and Hidromod joining in September. The work is expected to continue until November 2025, according to OWC.

Under the IPMA contract, OWC is supplying geophysical and geotechnical experts to oversee the offshore surveys, supported by Hidromod. Their objective is to ensure high health, safety, and environmental standards, perform quality control, and complete data collection and survey scopes as per IPMA’s guidelines.

The Leixões and Figueira da Foz wind farm sites are part of the national Maritime Spatial Planning Situation Plan (PSOEM) and PAER.

The Portuguese government approved the PAER earlier this year, designating four offshore wind farm areas in the Atlantic Ocean. These include two locations off Viana do Castelo’s coast, one near the port of Leixões, and another off Figueira da Foz’s coast.

“These are important wind farm areas for offshore renewable energy development in Portugal. Being involved in the early stages of these projects is both rewarding and exciting for our team,” said Ana Pirrone, OWC’s country manager for Portugal and Spain.
