Construction on LS Cable & System’s high-voltage direct current (HVDC) subsea cable factory in Virginia, USA, has commenced.

LS Cable & System stated that its subsidiary, LS GreenLink, held a groundbreaking ceremony for what will be the largest facility of its kind in the United States.

This investment, valued at EUR 681 million, marks the first significant local investment by a Korean company since the Trump administration.

The factory is being constructed on a 396,700 square meter brownfield site in Chesapeake, with the facility covering 70,000 square meters. LS GreenLink’s subsea cable facility is set to create over 330 full-time jobs.

Construction is expected to be completed in Q3 2027, with mass production starting in Q1 2028. Future expansions are planned depending on global demand, the company reported.

“We have secured 18 months’ export volume for Europe. The U.S. AI data center power demand in 2024 is expected to reach 32 GW, half of Korea’s annual power demand (62 GW), and by 2030, it is anticipated to triple to 120 GW, significantly boosting cable demand,” said Kim Ki-soo, CEO of LS GreenLink.

“This is the largest single private investment in Chesapeake’s history, enabling Chesapeake to become a key player in the global energy supply chain,” added Rick West, Mayor of Chesapeake.

Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin, Virginia Secretary of Commerce and Trade Juan Pablo Segura, Senator Tim Kaine (D-VA), Chesapeake Mayor Richard West, and other officials attended the groundbreaking on the first day of Oceantic Network’s 2025 International Partnering Forum (IPF).

“Today’s groundbreaking for LS GreenLink’s Chesapeake cable facility marks a pivotal moment for Virginia and America’s national offshore wind supply chain. This $700 million investment underscores the global industry’s commitment to the U.S. market, generating hundreds of long-term jobs and manufacturing components for domestic and international offshore wind projects,” said Liz Burdock, president and CEO of Oceantic Network.

“Thanks to the leadership of Dominion Energy, support from Governor Youngkin, and cornerstone investments like this, Virginia is emerging as a premier offshore wind hub in the U.S.”
