Volkswagen Debuts Its First All-Electric California Camper Van

Volkswagen has officially entered the all-electric camper van market with the introduction of the ID. California Cruise. This marks a significant milestone for the automaker, which plans to expand its electric California lineup in the coming years. Set to hit the road next year, the California Cruise is priced more competitively than any other model in the midsize California camper van series.

Volkswagen describes the ID. California Cruise not only as its first electric camper van but also as the inaugural model in a new all-electric California lineup, with more models expected in the next two years. As a basic sleeper van, the California Cruise offers overnight accommodations for two, using a folding bed and a specially designed mattress without additional amenities such as a kitchen or bathroom.

The California Cruise will be available in both short- and long-wheelbase variants

The camper van is equipped with a set of blackout blinds and ventilation grilles, ensuring comfort during overnight stays. A panoramic glass roof option is available, complete with a blackout blind to block out unwanted light. The vehicle comes with a table set and folding chairs, making it a versatile option for outdoor enthusiasts.

While the ID. California Cruise may lack some features like a kitchen or toilet, it focuses on essential camping needs with its “California” mode. This mode allows for the use of traction battery power for heating and cooling, offering up to 48 hours of climate control, depending on conditions.

Additionally, the ID. California Cruise offers vehicle-to-load capabilities, allowing campers to power electric appliances with up to 2,000 watts continuous/3,600 watts peak output. This feature makes it easier to use appliances like coffeemakers and electric cookers at base camp.

Available in short or long wheelbase, the ID. California Cruise starts at €60,791 (approximately $70,400). This pricing is notably lower than the California Beach model and offers a competitive option for those seeking an electric camper van without the premium often associated with electric vehicles.

Volkswagen plans to deliver the first ID. California Cruise models in early 2027 and will add more electric camper van models by 2028, potentially including options with more features like a pop-top or kitchen.
