BMW Accelerates its Electric Vehicle Expansion Amid Soaring European Demand

With European gas prices reaching unprecedented heights, the shift towards electric vehicles (EVs) is gaining momentum. The European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA) reports that EVs made up 22.2% of car sales in the first half of the year across the EU, UK, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland. This surge is reflected in BMW’s strategy to capitalize on the growing demand for electric cars.

BMW’s EV Lineup: A Growing Success

BMW’s latest electric models are contributing significantly to this trend. The iX3 is on the verge of reaching 100,000 orders, according to reports, with over 50,000 units already manufactured since production started at the new Debrecen facility in Hungary. The i3, now in production in Munich, is also experiencing “high demand,” further boosting BMW’s electric vehicle sales in Europe.

In the first six months of the year, about 28% of BMW’s sales were electric vehicles. This success isn’t limited to the iX3 and i3 models; BMW’s diverse range of EVs, from the compact iX1 to the luxurious i7, plays a crucial role in this achievement.

New Models and Future Plans

With the recent addition of the iX5 to its lineup, BMW is set to introduce the iX4 soon, followed by the i3 Touring and iX7 in 2027. Looking ahead, the iX6 is anticipated by 2028, alongside the i1 hatchback and i2 sedan.

BMW is also planning updates for existing models. The iX1 is expected to skip a mid-cycle refresh in favor of a new generation, potentially featuring rear-wheel drive and cylindrical batteries. Meanwhile, the iX2 might retain its current platform for a Life Cycle Impulse update in 2027, incorporating Neue Klasse design elements without major technical changes.

Additionally, the i5 is slated for an update in 2027, potentially benefiting from BMW’s collaboration with Rimac. While it’s uncertain if it will adopt cylindrical cells like the i7, improvements in range are anticipated through enhanced energy density.

The Broader Neue Klasse Vision

BMW’s commitment to electric vehicles extends beyond individual model launches. The Neue Klasse represents a new wave of technology, with existing EVs evolving and new models filling various market segments. As the demand for electric vehicles continues to rise, BMW aims to sustain its growth through a diverse and advanced EV lineup, ensuring its relevance in the rapidly changing automotive landscape.
