Founded in 2016 by Sir David McMurtry, McMurtry Automotive has quickly positioned itself as a formidable player in the auto industry. The Spéirling Pure, based on a prototype that became the first car to drive upside down, continues to astonish with its aerodynamic capabilities.

With the question on everyone’s mind being whether the production model can still defy gravity, McMurtry confirms it can, thanks to its Downforce-on-Demand system. This innovative fan-based mechanism generates an astounding 4,409 pounds of downforce, ensuring the car can indeed drive upside down.

The technology behind this involves high-speed fans operating at 23,000 rpm, combined with an underbody skirt that effectively “sucks” the car to the road, reminiscent of a powerful vacuum cleaner. This setup allows the Spéirling Pure to achieve 3 gs in cornering and braking, revolutionizing the concept of mechanical grip.

Production enhancements include stronger fan blades, better motors and cooling, and an air compressor system for retracting the skirt. This compressor allows for practical adjustments when loading the car onto a trailer or during low-speed driving.

Significantly, the Spéirling Pure’s battery has been upgraded to a 100-kWh pack, replacing the previous 60-kWh unit. This necessitated a longer wheelbase, expanding the car’s overall length to 150.2 inches. Despite these changes, it remains more compact than a Mazda MX-5 Miata.

The increased battery capacity adds roughly 665 pounds to the car’s weight, but it permits a race distance of 25 to 31 miles on a single charge. Charging times vary, ranging from 20 to 60 minutes to reach 95% capacity, influenced by temperature and charger capabilities.

Under the hood, dual electric motors provide 986 horsepower, propelling the car from 0 to 60 mph in an astonishing 1.55 seconds. Enhanced cooling systems and aerodynamic adjustments contribute to its high performance.

McMurtry’s goal is to offer a “plug-and-play” track car requiring minimal support, with 95% new components distinguishing the production model from the prototype. The revised carbon-fiber structure and improved suspension systems aim to enhance driver experience and convenience.

With only 100 units planned, each priced at £995,000 (approximately US$1.3 million), the Spéirling Pure will be a rare acquisition. McMurtry offers bespoke customization options for buyers, ensuring each car is unique.

For racing enthusiasts, the Spéirling Pure is eligible for competitions like the GT1 Sports Club and Global Time Attack. It will also be showcased at the renowned Goodwood Festival of Speed.
