Slate's New Electric Truck Will Cost Slightly More Than $24,950

Amid growing anticipation, Slate unveiled its “Blank Slate” electric pickup truck at a competitive starting price of $24,950, although this does not yet account for a pending destination charge. This introduction marks a significant move in the EV market, promising affordability without compromising on features.

Equipped with a newly enhanced 63 kWh battery, the Blank Slate boasts a range of 205 miles, a notable improvement from earlier projections. Charging is facilitated by a NACS port, ensuring compatibility with Tesla’s extensive Supercharger network, capable of delivering up to 120 kW. The onboard AC charger, rated at 11 kW, charges a depleted battery to full capacity in approximately four hours with Level 2 equipment.

Customization and Performance

The Blank Slate pickup will retail directly to buyers, bypassing conventional dealerships. Customers can personalize their vehicles with a choice of 100 colors, with 40 options priced at $499. Slate offers an SUV variant at $29,950, with a fastback version priced at $31,950, both excluding destination fees.

Slate allows for a high degree of customization post-purchase, with over 100 options available. A significant portion of these upgrades are budget-friendly, with 33% under $100 and 80% under $500. Enhancements like SUV kits and paint wraps can be installed by users themselves, providing flexibility in vehicle personalization.

Enhanced Technical Specifications

The Slate pickup operates with a single rear-wheel-drive setup, delivering 181 horsepower and 195 pound-feet of torque. It accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in 8 seconds and can reach a top speed of 90 mph. The vehicle’s MacPherson strut front suspension and De Dion axle in the rear contribute to a smooth ride, even on uneven roads, thanks to a 108.9-inch wheelbase. The rear axle configuration is notable, similar to that of the Mercedes-Benz electric G-wagen.

Capacity and Storage

Slate has increased the payload capacity for its pickup to 1550 pounds, while the SUV variant can handle 1263 pounds. The pickup bed spans over five feet, with a towing capacity of 2000 pounds, though best suited for short distances. A standout feature is the 7-cubic-foot front trunk, offering ample lockable storage, accommodating two small roller bags comfortably.

Reservations for the Blank Slate have reached 180,000, with production set to commence in the fourth quarter of this year. Slate aims for an annual production capacity of 150,000 units by late next year.
