Global Coalition Seeks to Bolster Nuclear Energy Through Philanthropy

Nuclear energy is poised to play a pivotal role in the future of global energy solutions. Despite its potential, a mere fraction of climate philanthropy is currently directed toward this sector. The announcement of the Global Coalition for Nuclear Philanthropy (GCNP) marks a significant step towards changing that narrative, aiming to enhance philanthropic investments in nuclear energy.

SINGAPORE | May 19, 2026 — At the Philanthropy Asia Summit, part of Ecosperity Week in Singapore, The Rockefeller Foundation and Temasek Trust introduced the Global Coalition for Nuclear Philanthropy (GCNP). This initiative seeks to mobilize philanthropic capital in support of nuclear energy for clean energy security, economic growth, and human development. The Coalition invites additional philanthropic partners to join its mission.

According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), a substantial increase in electricity demand is anticipated from 2024 to 2026 (source), driven by rising temperatures and energy consumption. Nuclear power is set to be a crucial part of meeting this demand, working in tandem with renewable sources. The Rockefeller Foundation’s 2025 report highlights how nuclear energy complements renewables, making both more cost-effective and scalable.

“Universal energy abundance — the kind that powers industries, anchors economies, and raises living standards for billions — requires firm, clean power alongside renewables. The next generation of nuclear technologies, including small modular reactors, is advancing fast and costs are coming down, opening a real prospect that many developing and emerging economies could add safe, abundant, clean baseload power to their energy mix,” said Ashvin Dayal, Senior Vice President for Power at The Rockefeller Foundation, during the convening at the Philanthropy Asia Summit. “Getting there will take serious work on policy, regulation, finance, and human capital. That is precisely why we are forming the Global Coalition for Nuclear Philanthropy now.”

Philanthropy’s contribution to nuclear energy has been minimal, with only 0.1–0.2% of climate-related donations directed toward it, as per Founders Pledge analysis using ClimateWorks Foundation data. Despite this, interest in nuclear energy is growing among policymakers and investors.

“Nuclear power is a vital clean energy source that can help address the climate crisis. Through the Global Coalition for Nuclear Philanthropy, we aim to convene like-minded partners to support informed dialogue and responsible approaches to nuclear energy in upholding the highest standards of safety, security, and responsible waste management,” said Desmond Kuek, Executive Director and CEO, Temasek Trust.

Building a Strong Foundation for Nuclear Energy

The Rockefeller Foundation and Temasek Trust are key members of a coalition that includes organizations such as the Blue Horizons Foundation, CleanEcon, Founders Pledge, Ray Rothrock, and the Rodel Foundation. The coalition aligns with the COP28 Declaration to triple global nuclear power capacity by 2050, a commitment made by over 30 nations to achieve net-zero targets.

The Oppenheimer Project has played a crucial role in shaping the GCNP from inception to launch and will continue as a Strategic Partner. TT Foundation Advisors, the philanthropic advisory division of Temasek Trust, will offer initial support to the GCNP Secretariat, including grant management and donor-advised funds.

GCNP aims to increase and align philanthropic investments in nuclear energy through four strategic pathways over the next 5 to 10 years:

  1. Build the case: Craft narratives that link nuclear energy to tangible outcomes like energy security, climate resilience, and economic competitiveness to foster public support.
  2. Grow the field: Strengthen global talent, institutions, and networks essential for the safe and effective deployment of nuclear power.
  3. Make it bankable: Develop financing structures that mitigate risk and attract both public and private investments to scale nuclear projects.
  4. Strengthen governance: Enhance frameworks for safety, security, and governance to ensure verifiable and robust nuclear expansion.

The Coalition will serve as a hub for funders to share expertise, identify opportunities, and build partnerships. Input from government, academia, civil society, and industry experts will guide the GCNP’s initiatives, with local stakeholders participating in defining priorities and designing interventions.
