Volkswagen Launches ID. Polo: A New Contender in the Affordable EV Market

The highly anticipated Volkswagen ID. Polo has made its debut, marking a significant move by the German automaker into Europe’s affordable electric vehicle segment. This subcompact hatchback is set to compete with notable rivals like the Renault 5 and Kia EV3.

Starting at a price of €24,995 ($29,300), the ID. Polo offers a balance of affordability and electric performance. It features a 52 kWh battery capable of achieving a maximum range of 282 miles under the WLTP cycle. This makes it an ideal choice for urban dwellers.

The design of the ID. Polo mirrors the ID. 2all concept introduced in 2023, aiming to maintain the popularity of urban hatchbacks in Europe. With its four-door layout, five-seat capacity, and front-wheel drive, Volkswagen’s latest EV is designed for everyday convenience.

Equipped with features like vehicle-to-load (V2L) technology, DC fast charging, LED headlights, and a modernized interior, the ID. Polo addresses some past criticisms by reintroducing traditional buttons in place of the capacitive ones disliked in previous models such as the ID.4.

Volkswagen is offering the ID. Polo with a newly engineered APP290 electric drive unit, available in three power configurations and two battery sizes. The base model includes a 37 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery paired with a 114 hp (85 kW) motor. A higher power option with 133 hp (99 kW) is also available with the same battery.

For those seeking more power, the upper trims feature a 52 kWh nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) battery and a 208 hp (155 kW) motor. An even more powerful ID. Polo GTI version, boasting 222 hp (166 kW), is expected to join the lineup next year.

Rapid charging capabilities are a highlight, with the 37 kWh battery supporting up to 90 kW for a quick top-up from 10% to 80% in about 27 minutes. The larger 52 kWh battery supports up to 105 kW, reducing the charging time to approximately 24 minutes.

Volkswagen has also considered comfort and luxury, offering optional features such as a Harman Kardon sound system, a panoramic glass roof, and massaging front seats—an industry first in this segment according to the automaker.

Size-wise, the ID. Polo measures 159.5 inches in length, 71.5 inches in width, and 60.2 inches in height, with a wheelbase of 102.3 inches. The trunk offers a 441-liter capacity, expanding to 1,249 liters with the rear seats folded.

Volkswagen plans to open orders for the ID. Polo in Europe by the end of April, positioning itself as a strong competitor in the subcompact EV market.
