Los Angeles Sets Ambitious Course Towards a Sustainable Future
In a bold move to combat climate change, Los Angeles is making strides in its pursuit of environmental sustainability and clean energy. The city’s new Climate Action Plan, introduced by Mayor Karen Bass, outlines more than 50 actions designed to achieve carbon neutrality by 2045, significantly boost solar energy production, and expand electric vehicle infrastructure.
“We’ve already made L.A. coal-free, opened one of the largest solar and battery storage facilities in the country, and doubled the number of EV chargers in Los Angeles,” stated Mayor Bass. “With this plan, we’re doubling down on that progress and moving full steam ahead to clean our air, create green jobs, and build a more sustainable city.” For further details, photos are available here.
The initiative includes increasing the city’s renewable energy to 80% by 2030 and achieving 100% clean energy by 2035. Additionally, the plan focuses on doubling local solar capacity, cutting carbon emissions from goods movement, and installing 120,000 new EV charging stations. The plan also prioritizes disadvantaged communities in efforts to expand energy resources and improve infrastructure.
At the heart of sustainability efforts is the focus on water. Councilmember Imelda Padilla emphasized the importance of water infrastructure, stating, “Access to clean water is a fundamental right, and investing in modern water infrastructure is what makes that possible.” The plan includes targets to source 70% of Los Angeles’ water locally by 2035 and to enhance water reclamation efforts.
Dr. Cassie Rauser, CEO of TreePeople, praised the plan for its commitment to nature-based solutions, while Bridget Netter from UNITE-LA highlighted the economic inclusivity of the plan, which creates new career paths in green sectors.
Key Initiatives of the Climate Action Plan
- Increasing renewable energy share to 80% by 2030 and 100% by 2035.
- Doubling local solar capacity by 2030.
- Cutting carbon pollution by investing in zero-emission trucks and charging infrastructure at the Port of Los Angeles.
- Improving energy efficiency in buildings by 15% by 2030.
- Electrifying 100% of LADOT transit buses by 2028.
- Installing 120,000 new EV charging ports by 2030, with a focus on disadvantaged communities.
- Increasing Sustainable Aviation Fuel use at LAX and Van Nuys Airport by 28% by 2030.
- Adopting an Oil and Gas Drilling Ordinance by 2026 to end extraction within city limits.
- Reducing potable water use by 25% by 2035.
- Eliminating organic waste in landfills by 2035.
The announcement was made at the Donald C. Tillman Water Reclamation Plant in Van Nuys, where efforts are underway to double its water-purifying capacity by 2027. This development aims to purify enough water daily for 500,000 residents and reduce reliance on imported water.
