Tesla and Others Recall Over 4 Million Vehicles in China Due to Issues

Tesla and other automakers are recalling 4M+ vehicles in China due to door handle issues, affecting emergency exits.
Tesla and Other Electric Vehicle Companies Begin Massive China Recall

A major recall is affecting over 4 million vehicles from nine automakers, with Tesla leading the charge in numbers. The recall, initiated by Chinese regulators, is due to concerns over the safety of door handles in emergencies, affecting nearly 3 million Tesla vehicles.

On August 24, Tesla’s stock experienced a nearly 4% drop, indicating market reactions to the recall announcement. The issue centers around electric door handles that could be hard to locate and operate during emergencies, as they rely on the vehicle’s power system rather than mechanical operation.

Tesla’s sleek, electrically powered door handles, which enhance the futuristic look of its cars, have been adopted by several other automakers. However, these designs are now under scrutiny due to safety concerns. Among the other companies recalling vehicles in China are Xiaomi, Leapmotor, Xpeng, and Geely Holding.

In a recent statement, Tesla outlined that the recall affects its Model 3, Y, S, and X, specifically due to door handles that seamlessly integrate into the car’s design. The company noted, “In extreme situations such as a severe collision causing the vehicle’s low-voltage system to fail, this could hinder occupants from quickly opening the doors to escape and impede rescue efforts by those outside the vehicle, posing a safety hazard.”

Regulatory Actions Intensify

Reports from Reuters highlight that Chinese authorities are responding to several incidents where door releases failed during emergencies. An incident involving a Xiaomi vehicle last October, where a driver died because bystanders couldn’t open the door, has amplified these concerns.

The regulatory decision is part of broader changes in China, which plans to ban concealed door handles in electric vehicles by 2027, with a grace period until 2029 for approved models. New regulations require manual release handles both inside and outside vehicles, as reported by the BBC.

In response, Tesla and other manufacturers are adding warning labels and planning software updates to enhance safety features, such as automatic window opening in case of accidents.

Implications for Tesla’s Market Presence

The recall’s impact on Tesla’s stock comes amid broader challenges in the tech sector, with rising bond yields affecting investor sentiment. While Tesla’s innovative door handle design has been a distinguishing feature, the recall could influence brand perception.

Despite the negative headlines, experts suggest that this issue may not significantly affect Tesla in the long run. The company’s focus has shifted towards developing advanced technologies, including a potential robotaxi fleet and humanoid robots, which are attracting more attention from investors.

Nevertheless, Tesla’s valuation remains a concern for some market analysts, who view it as overextended given the current challenges.
