UK-based XLCC has rebranded as Aquora, focusing on cable installation and manufacturing to meet the increasing demand for high-voltage cable supply in the UK and Europe.
Aquora’s initial focus is on installation, utilizing a new UK-flagged cable-lay vessel (CLV) that will also offer maintenance services for critical infrastructure. Cable supply will be sourced from Orient Cables (NBO) through a strategic partnership with the Chinese company.
A company spokesperson stated that the enterprise adopts a new strategy and business model, while personnel, IP, and shareholders remain unchanged from XLCC.
The rebranding reflects a strategic reset by the board, addressing market needs with a phased plan.
The first phase, set for this year, involves launching project delivery and cable installation services, creating 150-200 highly skilled jobs, with initial cable manufacturing subcontracted to NBO.
The second phase, aimed for 2028, includes establishing a high-voltage DC and AC subsea and underground cable manufacturing facility in Scotland, expected to employ around 800 people at the former Hunterston Terminal site in Ayrshire.
“Securing the UK’s transition to homegrown, low-carbon power is constrained by infrastructure, not generation. Developers need cable installation capacity now – not in a decade. Aquora will meet that demand and create a financeable path to cable manufacturing in Scotland,” said Ragnhild Katteland, CEO.
Over the next decade, Aquora plans to create approximately 1,000 jobs.
Lewis Gillies, Executive Chairman, stated: “Aquora will enhance our energy security and build industrial capability in the UK, addressing a critical constraint and developing strategic autonomy in a nationally significant energy supply chain area. I look forward to leading this growing enterprise and securing the UK’s clean energy future.”
