Unpredictable weather patterns can shift spring growth, exposing berries and nuts to damaging late freezes, as seen in northwestern Nevada where such conditions have led to more conflicts and increased bear fatalities. Similar patterns are observed during droughts in New York, with conflicts peaking from July to September. Along British Columbia’s salmon-rich coast, a reduction in salmon runs has been correlated with a 20% increase in bear-related incidents, as bears venture into towns in search of food.

Interpreting the Data: Beyond Climate Change

While climate change plays a role, it’s not the sole factor in human-bear interactions. In many regions, increased human activity and recovering bear populations are key contributors. Vermont’s black bear numbers, for instance, exceed management targets, while Scandinavian research shows that bears near settlements often do not seek better food opportunities but rather encounter humans due to overlapping territories.
